Why
should I save Energy?.
In the year ending 30 June 1995, Australians consumed 160,114 million
kWh (kilowatt hours) of electricity - that's equivalent to every
single Australian having 14 televisions running all day every day
for a year! Generating all this electricity led to the release of
around 150 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere*.
Carbon
dioxide is the most common of many 'greenhouse' gases that act as
insulating agents in the atmosphere, trapping the sun's heat in
a process known as the 'greenhouse effect'. Scientists agree that
large increases in the level of CO-2 in our atmosphere will lead
to climate change.
By
conserving energy, at home and at work, you will help reduce greenhouse
gas emissions, saving money on electricity bills in the process.
UNSW
was the first university in Australia to sign the Greenhouse
Challenge Agreement and by doing so we are committed to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions from our own operations. This initiative
has the support of senior management and has been endorsed by the
UNSW Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Niland.
