UNSW Energy Management has launched the first stage of the "Lighting Challenge".

This project is going to improve the effectiveness and energy efficiency of lighting in UNSW buildings.

Did you know - UNSW spends about $1.7M each year just on office lighting? That equates to about 27,000 Tonnes of Greenhouse gas!!!

Did you know - More than 40% of lights are left 'on' during the day in empty UNSW offices? (it's easy for us all to forget)

Did you know - It's cost-effective to switch fluorescent lights off if you are out of the room for only 15 minutes?

Did you know - In summer, your room would be cooler if you switch the ceiling fan off when you're not in the room?

The Solution

Specialist lighting contractors will be improving the effectiveness and efficiency of the lighting at UNSW. This may include some or all of the following measures:

• New light fittings
• New high efficiency lamps in existing fittings
• Special reflectors in existing fittings
• Light switches in rooms without local control
• Motion detectors (programmed to switch off after 20 minutes)
